COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland men's soccer program and Ludwig Field played host to Southampton FC and Swansea City of the Barclay's Premier League in mid-July.
“We were thrilled to host Southampton and Swansea City here at the University of Maryland,” Terrapin head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “It was an incredible opportunity for our program.”
The newest member of the Under Armour soccer family, Southampton recently inked a seven-year partnership with the global sports and innovation brand. Southampton became the second Premier League team to be sponsored by Under Armour, joining Tottenham Hotspur.
“We are so happy that Southampton has joined the UA Team,” Cirovski said. “It is fitting that Southampton FC began their UA partnership at the University of Maryland where Kevin Plank's entrepreneurial spirit blossomed to bring the world the best sports equipment on the planet.”
Southampton's trip concluded with a match against the DC United U-23s at RFK Stadium on Friday, July 15 in Washington, D.C. Current Terps Jake Rozhansky, Cody Albrecht, Cody Niedermeier and Suli Dainkeh all earned starts while Jorge Calix and Donovan Pines came off the bench in a 2-0 loss to the BPL side.
Rozhansky, Amar Sejdic and Gordon Wild also had the opportunity to train with Swansea City during their training at Ludwig Field.
“It was a great environment to see where I stood among players I watch every weekend in the premier league,” Sejdic said. “I was very grateful for the opportunity to line up against some of the top players in the world.”
Maryland officially opens its 2016 campaign with a match against UCLA in Los Angeles on August 26. The Terps' home opener against Hartford is slated for Aug. 29.
