McCoy Announces 2016-17 Freshmen Class

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland head wrestling coach Kerry McCoy announced the arrival of 10 freshmen to the fold for 2016-17 season today. The class features state champions, National Prep All-Americans and InterMat Wrestling top-20 recruits.

“It's an exciting time of year with our incoming class arriving on campus and joining our program,” said McCoy. “Our staff did a great job putting this group together, and I'm looking forward to seeing them develop in the coming months. They're ready to get work.”

Brandon Cray – 125 – Hamilton, N.J. – Hamilton East (Steinert)

Before Maryland: 2015 & 2016 Times of Trenton Wrestler of the Year...2015 Colonial Valley Conference (CVC) Wrestler of the Year...2x NJ State Champion...won NJ state title at 113 pounds in 2015...captured second NJ state title as a senior at 120 pound...No. 6 prospect in the nation at 120 pounds according to InterMat Wrestling...won the first state title in Steinert wrestling history and only the third ever for Mercer County...Super 32 place winner...three-time Region 7 and District 25 champion...finished senior season undefeated...NJ.com 2015-16 lightweight to watch...finished fourth in the state at 106 pounds as a sophomore.


Hunter Lucas – 125 – Cridersville, Ohio – Lima Central Catholic

Before Maryland: Two-time Ohio State finalist...three-time Ohio state placer...finished senior season with 45-3 record.


Alex Vargas – 125/133 – Syosset, N.Y. – Syosset HS

Before Maryland: Finished fourth in NY states...fourth NHSCA Senior Nationals...2015 league and county champion...2016 senior Virginia Beach All-American (8th)...finished career with 136-46 record.


Michael Doetsch – 125/133 – Dundalk, Md. – Severn School

Before Maryland: Three-time Maryland State runner up...National Prep All American (7th)...career record of 170-30...170 wins is a Severn school record...all-met team selection.


Mike DeClario – 141 – Kinnelon, N.J. – Kinnelon HS

Before Maryland: finished high school career 103-17...three-time First Team All-Suburban Trends...Three-time first team all-conference...two-time first team All-NJAC...team captain...helped lead team to state quarterfinals...three-time region qualifier.    


Peter Tedesco – 141/149 – Woburn, Mass. – Bellmont Hill School

Before Maryland: Two-time National Prep Finalist, two-time National Prep All-American, two-time Beast of the East place winner, three-time New England Champ, four-time finalist, NHSCA Sophomore Nationals All-American.


Vincent Defilippo – 157/165 – Westfield, N.J. – St. Joseph Regional

Before Maryland: New Jersey state placer...NHSCA Junior National All-American...finished high school career 110-28...Seventh Place Beast of the East...Pop and Flo Tournament Champ.  


Spencer Woods – 157/165 – Kotzebue, Alaska – Kotzebue HS

Before Maryland: Two-time Alaska State Champion...2015 Triple Crown Champion...helped team capture two state championships...2013 state placer (4th).


Niko Cappello – 184 – Cranford, N.J. – Cranford HS

Before Maryland: NJ state place winner (7th)...three-time NHSCA All-American (4th, 3rd, 6th)...four-time District 11 Champion...two-time Region 3 Champion...three-time All-Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference)...92-24 overall record before starting senior campaign...also played football finishing with 263 career tackles and 12.5 sacks...football team won 2015 state title.
