ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Maryland cross country squad turned in its second consecutive meet victory Saturday morning, finishing first at the Salty Dog Invitational hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The Terps topped five local rivals for the team title, scoring 43 points to outpace Navy (48), UMBC (69), George Washington (70), Loyola (134) and Bowie State (190).
Once again it was freshman Kathryn Gearhart leading the way for the Terps, as she finished third in the field at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course with a time of 23:06.76. Senior teammates Sydney Almeida (23:17.33) and Alexa Squirini (23:17.90) were not far behind, claiming fourth and fifth place overall in the 6k race.
Maryland's depth was the difference for the second straight meet, as freshmen Caroline Augelli and Paige Novak's finishes gave UMD a five-point edge on the Mids. Augelli took 15th with a mark of 24:19.66, while Novak was 16th with a time of 24:23.37 to secure the meet win.
Sophomore Emily Bracher also posted a top-20 finish, crossing the line in 24:28.71. Junior Erin Causey (24:50.99) and sophomore Kiernan Keller (25:07.15) rounded out the top-eight for Maryland on the day.
Maryland will enter a brief hiatus from competition over the next few weeks, before returning to action at the Paul Short Invitational on October 1. The event, hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa., is one of the largest regular season meets in the country and will attract top competition from around the region.
