COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore forward Gordon Wild scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift the No. 4 Maryland men's soccer team past Penn State, 3-2, on Sunday night in front of nearly 6,000 fans at Ludwig Field.
Wild's seventh and eighth goals of the season give him more than any single Terrapin a year ago. Maryland (5-0-2, 2-0-1 B1G) needed to battle back from two deficits during the match, despite outshooting Penn State a staggering 14-2.
Dayonn Harris scored both goals on counter attacks for the Nittany Lions. After his goal in the 57th minute, Amar Sejdic was able to answer with a penalty kick score 13 minutes later for a 1-1 match.
Harris's second score on a breakaway from 10 yards was equalized by Wild's penalty kick in the 84h minute.
Wild posted his third game-winning goal of the season six minutes into the first overtime period to give Maryland the win. It was the Terps' third consecutive overtime contest this season and its fourth overall.
“I'm extremely happy and relieved to come out with a victory,” head coach Sasho Cirovski, who was honored in a pregame ceremony for his 350th win at Maryland, said. "When we tied it and got into overtime I told them to forget about the past 90 minutes and we had to make one more play than they do.
“We have to become better and tougher to score against defensively. That's my responsibility and that will be the focal point of our preparation moving forward. I also can't say enough about our incredible fans. They were tremendous tonight."
The Terps will have the midweek off in preparation for a battle with Michigan State Friday at Ludwig Field.
