EVANSTON, Ill. –  The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (7-3, 2-1) was edged by No. 11 Northwestern, 3-2, after a late goal by the Wildcats (8-2, 3-0) Sunday afternoon in Evanston.

Maryland tied the match twice in the second half, but a Northwestern score with 11 minutes to play was the difference.

The Wildcats scored 1:42 into the game when Pascale Massey slipped in a shot off a rebound. Northwestern would lead 1-0 at halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half, redshirt senior Emma Rissinger tied the game when she deflected in a pass from junior Carrie Hanks in the 46th minute. Seven minutes later, the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead when Saar de Breij scored in the 53rd minute.

Less than two minutes later, redshirt senior Welma Luus knotted the match at two off a pass from graduate student Grace Balsdon. Northwestern took its final lead with just over 10 minutes to play when Massey scored once more.

“Northwestern was very strong and came out with a winning attitude,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “Maryland came back twice and we learned a lot from today, just emotionally being on the road and being comfortable being uncomfortable. We matured today, our freshmen got great experience. We give Northwestern credit because they played very well. This gives us an opportunity to grow and we look forward to playing Michigan Friday."

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made five stops on the day.

Next, the Terrapins will host No. 8 Michigan (7-1, 2-0) Friday at 6 p.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Admission is free and parking will be free and open after 4 p.m.
