Saturday's matchup is the fifth all-time between Maryland and Iowa. Maryland has won all three meetings since joining the Big Ten, including both last year. The Terps won 76-56 in Iowa City last Jan. 10 behind 19 points from Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, 15 and 11 rebounds from Brionna Jones and 11 from Kristen Confroy. Two months later, Maryland beat Iowa, 75-55, in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. Walker-Kimbrough and Jones each added 23 points and Jones added 15 boards.
The Terps topped Penn State, 89-83, Wednesday night in College Park. Jones went 15-for-19 from the field and 12-for-14 fro the free throw line for a career-high 42 points, which tied the program record for points in a game. Marissa Coleman was the first Terp to reach 42 points in 2009, and Walker-Kimbrough scored 41 at Purdue last February. Walker-Kimbrough added 16 points Wednesday and Destiny Slocum scored 11 with eight assists.
Jones is No. 5 on Maryland's rebounding list with 1,007 career boards and recently became the fifth Terp to reach 1,000 career rebounds. She is No. 13 on Maryland's scoring list with 1,557 points. She currently leads the Big Ten with 11 double-doubles this year, including seven straight.
Walker-Kimbrough is No. 7 on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 1,782 career points. She needs 96 points to pass Shay Doron at No. 6 (1,878). Walker-Kimbrough's career three-point percentage of 45.5 percent is currently the best in Maryland history ahead of Kristi Toliver's career percentage of 40.8 percent.
The Terrapins are No. 2 in the country in field goal percentage (50.9), scoring margin (+30.3) and rebounding margin (+16.8). They are third in scoring (90.4), fourth in assists (20.7) and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
Jones and Walker-Kimbrough are two of 25 of the top players in the nation named to the John R. Wooden Award Top 25 released this week. Maryland is one of five schools with multiple student-athletes on the list.
After Saturday's matchup, the Terps will return home to host Michigan (14-4, 3-1) Thursday at 6 p.m. ET at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, visit the Terrapin Ticket Office online at umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
