Maryland-Rutgers Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
"I thought Rutgers came in and their style of play was evident in the first half. They did a tremendous job slowing the game down and taking the possessions away from us. We had an uncharacteristic first half going into their style of play. I thought the third quarter, obviously, was more indicative of how we play. Just the energy that we had, we stopped turning the ball over, and our defense led to our offense. I thought Kaila was sensational, especially in the first half keeping us in it, in terms of what we were doing. Our vets, our seniors, did a phenomenal job leading the way, especially in that third quarter. As you see in the fourth we've got to be able to extend our depth and so again, uncharacteristic of our depth tonight but an area for us to grow and improve on."
On it being frustrating playing against a team with Rutgers' style of play:
"I mean it's my least favorite style of play. It's like going to the dentist and getting drilled. We love the uptempo, transition, let's play type of style. Credit to them in the first half, I thought they did a phenomenal job of winning out with their style of play, but we were able to punch that and break that open in terms of what we wanted to do in the third quarter."
On the change at halftime:
"We checked back in, obviously, at half time, and we talked about our energy needing to improve and things we wanted to do on both ends of the floor, both defensiely and offensively. Obviously, Rollins, got real hot in the first half; players do that, so we really needed to be able to adjust to that."
On there being a specific emphasis on defense coming into the second quarter:
"Yeah, we continue to talk about our defense. I think when it really clicks, or we hear it a little stronger than we click in a little stronger on where we need to be. But again, I think Rutgers hit a lot of great shots in the first half and we were able to settle in in the second."
On if it's difficult to stay patient against a team like Rutgers:
"We just have to be able to just stay true to who we are, no matter who we're playing. And try to be the best Maryland team that we know we can be, and that's defend, rebound, and run, no matter who we're playing."
On what the difference was in the third quarter that allowed them to break out:
"At halftime, Coach told us guards that we have to be able to move on offense and to not be surprised when we got wide opened jump shots. I thought in the first half, we settled for a lot of jump shots even though they weren't falling. Coach told us to start driving, and once we started driving, Destiny and Kristen [Confroy] started hitting shots and I thought that opened up for everything else."
On there possibly being any fatigue in this game from the Michigan game:
"I wouldn't blame fatigue, I just think we need to be more locked in. We're always well prepared in my opinion, but we just need to make sure we execute better. Rutgers is a great team and they got us to play their style in the first half. We just have to make sure that we come out and throw the first punch and can't try to figure teams out."
Senior Center Brionna Jones
On what made this game that much harder:
""They were definitely packing in the paint, and I think that the slower tempo didn't allow us to move as much we usually do and it was harder to get open."
On what's been working well for her down the stretch:
"I think just doing all the little things, pushing through fatigue, and just trying to go for the rebounds whenever I can."
Freshman Guard Kaila Charles
On her offensive run before the end of the half giving her momentum for the second half:
"It just gives you confidence that your team is trusting you with the ball. They were giving it to me when I had good position and I was just able to score off of it."
Rutgers Head Coach C. Vivian Stringer
On what changed after their first half performance:
“You know what, it's amazing because we could have written this in a golden book and sealed it and told you that that was going to happen. It has happened just about every game. I'll tell you what happened. We were playing Iowa, same thing. Whoever we're playing. The highest of the high. Generally we're even or we're up in the first two quarters. And so my thought, the last time we played Iowa, I thought we tend to start off sort of slow, so I thought, okay, we're going to press more. But because of the intensity of the game, we shouldn't have done that. The result was that they got a couple of easybaskets. Well, as soon as that happens it's like déjà vu all over again. We've been here before. So this time, based upon the intensity of the game, I thought that it was going to be okay if we come back with the same defense we've been playing. Rather than take a chance because I knew that Maryland isc apable and they do handle the ball well. I guessed wrong.
"For whatever reason, we're playing not to lose. So, it's just a matter of being a little cautious. I'm hoping we can work that out and I think that we can, and we're disappointed with ourselves. Not with Maryland because Maryland is an outstanding team and deserves to be one of the top four teams in the country. Just a great team period. I'm really measuring us in every aspect of everything, the psychological side of it, the mental side of it, because we believe we're much better than our record.”
On her team's defense against Brionna Jones:
“I'm really proud of our post. I'll tell you what, I've been on their necks for quite a bit of time. So, the mindset is that we would work to see how many times she was actually touching the ball. We were able to see very quickly, Vicky [Harris] did she touch it five times on you, or did she touch it two times on Des [Keeling], five times on other players? So we were taking pride in that. Brionna Jones is a monster. She has what I would consider suction cups for hands, knows where she is on the boards, and she's got great angles to the basket. I have nothing but praise for her. I look to see how she plays and what we can doabout our own post. But keep in mind that got that kind of defense because it was well-warranted, the great player that she is. And I'm really proud of our own players for really taking it to heart what is goingon. Surprisingly enough, this young lady Kaila Charles, while she can score, she wasn't the person to do the same kind of damage. That may be because the other big person was trying to help whoever was."
On her team's shot clock violations:
“First of all, we were all studying the tapes, and Maryland has done that to a lot of teams. But we have been having that problem this year. Every couple of games we do have those issues. The attempt probably is to execute instead of just playing the game, and knowing what the clock is. That's going to come from a young point guard and another person that's her sidekick, so to speak. They need to do abetter job of talking to each other. And there was several times where our point guard was calling a quick-hit play, but couldn't get everybody in place. They did a pretty good job, based upon the fact that they weren't playing quite where they needed to play, and there's a lot of reasons for that."
