Maryland-Iowa Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
“I thought the crowd was sensational today. They were really loud and into it and a big reason why its one of the biggest home court advantages in the country. We knew going into this game, having played Iowa two weeks ago just how tough and aggressive they were going to be. They showed nothing less and fought for 40 minutes. They really came in prepared and ready to play. I thought we were able to settle in once we were able to stop turning the ball over and missing defensive assignments. I thought our starters did a tremendous job moving the ball and being aggressive against their zone. We have some really good energy off the bench. I thought we were able to get some good energy which is something we are really trying to build upon.”

On why Maryland was so successful in the second quarter:
“We started to take what the defense was giving us. At time we tried to take force the action and be aggressive. I thought we were able to settle in and play through Bri [Jones] and be able to work inside out.”

On the importance of defense on the big second quarter run:
“I thought we had some uncharacteristic breakdowns in the first quarter so it was nice to see us tighten up in the second quarter. I thought we were able to get on the same page. I thought Kathleen Doyle was sensational for them. I thought she was a spark with tremendous energy and gave them a lot of great plays today.”

On development of Brionna Jones' play:
“You see why Brionna is so talented. I think what is really incredible to watch is the work she has put in behind the scenes and the ability to be coached. You see how talented she is. She can hit the free throw line jumper. I think she is spectacular at drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. You see eight free throw attempts by her today. She was very active and she really likes playing Iowa. She has had a lot of success against them. We have to be able to expand on that depth and Bri has been able to back up a lot of great practices and is a big reason why she is so successful.”

On her assessment of the team halfway through the Big Ten schedule:
“I love where we're at; We're really practicing hard and well and we're not satisfied.  You can definitely see some areas where we still need to improve and where this game keeps you humble and hungry, but as long as we continue to be in that mode and continue to keep working, great things are in store for this team. “

Senior Center Brionna Jones
On her injury in the beginning of the game and how she feels now:
"I came down on somebody's foot and it twisted a little bit, but I got it wrapped up and came right back in the game. It's still a little sore and a little tender but I try to play through it."

On the energy Destiny Slocum gave the team in the second quarter:
"Destiny always brings out a lot of energy, but that particular position gave us a lot of energy going into the locker room and a lot of confidence just to finish out the game."

Freshman Guard Destiny Slocum
On what she thinks effective three-point shooting means for the rest of the team:
"I think that it gives them an outlet; when they're not open, we have a lot of weapons. I mean I'm shooting well, but we have a bunch of three point shooters that shoot well on our team. So I think it just helps them out a bit."

On what she would say her range is in three-point shots and what type of long range shots she practices:
"Pretty deep. I was told when I was younger that I needed to expand my three-point range, so then I just started taking three-point shots. But I can't really do that in a game, because that would just not be OK."

On how much of a focus it was, to not let Iowa get confident enough to stay in this game:
"I think it was more of just making sure that we stay true to us, and knowing how we lock down on defense and how we bring the tempo on offense. Playing into our game was a lot different from how we played them last game, because we let them dictate it. And that was one of our things to focus on, let our team and the way we play dictate this game.

Sophomore Forward Brianna Fraser
On her career high 17 points today, in 15 minutes, and what was working for her today:
"I think that my teammates were finding me a lot in the post. I listened to my coach, she told me to drive the ball, so I drove the ball and got to the free throw line."

Iowa Head Coach Lisa Bluder
Opening statement:
“Just want to congratulate Maryland, I thought they played very well especially that spurt in the second quarter. I thought we had a good game going and any lapse that you have against them they just take full advantage of. I think they did that to us in the second quarter for about three minutes and in the third quarter, when we got it down to 11, about two minutes. Otherwise we only had five turnovers in the second half, I'm proud of that with my team. I thought we shot the ball decently well, I thought we attacked off the dribble very well. It was just too much Brionna Jones, too much paint points for us to come out of here with a victory tonight.”

On the difficulty of containing all Maryland's weapons:
“Yeah, they do. I mean they've got a great assortment of weapons. When you've got an inside player like [Brionna] Jones, you've got outside shooters like Shatori [Walker-Kimbrough] and they got a great point guard, they just have so many things for you to worry about. It's really hard to double off of great three-point shooters, they're very effective offensively. They are just really really hard to contain.”

On their biggest problem against Maryland:
“I think it was their offense. I'm happy with our offense today, I thought we played very well offensively, it was a defensive battle for us. We just didn't get the job done defensively.”

On how Maryland will fare down the stretch, into the tournament:
“I think they're an excellent team, they're well coached, they just have great balance, and they have all the things you need to make a long run. As far as a savvy point guard, outside shooting and an unbelievable post. I think [Brianna] Fraser came off the bench and played really well today. She gave them a real nice look off the bench, that was good for them to see. I think they're well equipped to make a good run.”
