Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's soccer team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament Thursday night as Albany won a penalty kick shout out after 110 minutes of scoreless play at Ludwig Field.

The Terrapins (10-5-4) dominated the majority of play, but could not overcome a stingy Great Danes (14-4-3) defense. Brynjar Steinborsson made the winning spot kick for Albany.

Maryland was on the front foot right off the opening whistle, as Gordon Wild cut inside with his right foot and saw his 18-yard shot tipped away in the first minute of play. Maryland continued to pile on the pressure. Sebastian Elney, Eryk Williamson and Jake Rozhansky all had opportunities to provide the breakthrough, but the match went to the half all even.

Rozhansky was active early in the second half and got off a shot that was saved. Williamson and DJ Reeves had close range goal bound opportunities blocked away as the Albany defense sunk in and absorbed Maryland pressure.

Maryland keeper Dayne St. Clair was called upon in the first overtime period as he made a fantastic point blank stop to keep the match scoreless. Following that chance, neither team had a great opportunity to grab the win.

That match would be settled in penalty kicks. After Wild missed Maryland's first spot kick, St. Clair made a save to keep Albany off the board. Williamson tallied for the Terps and was matched Moosah Khanat. Chase Gasper hit the crossbar and Albany made the ensuing kick to take the lead 2-1 after three rounds.

Johannes Bergmann then slotted home to tie the shootout and Maryland would leave the fourth round tied at 2-2 after St. Clair made another save. Four straight makes for both teams was broken by Eric Matzelevich's miss. With the chance to win it, Albany's Carlos Clark shot wide. After Elney missed high, Steinborsson ended the match, sending St. Clair the wrong way and putting his PK home.

Maryland completes its season advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 37th time in school history.
