COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted its fifth annual “Terps Got Talent Student-Athlete Talent Show” on Wednesday evening in the Hoff Theater at Adele H. Stamp Student Union.
For the fourth year in a row, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee partnered with TerpThon to raise money and awareness for the Children's National Health System in Washington D.C. Before the winners were announced, a representative of TerpThon spoke to the crowd about the importance of raising money for pediatric cancer and thanking the teams for their support.
This year, $3,000 was raised by the event.
The night featured 13 performances with student-athlete representatives from seven teams. The acts ranged from rapping to dance routines to a magic act. The event was emceed by Julie Duncan (women's track and field) and Ieshia Small (women's basketball).
“Terps Got Talent has continued to grow,” SAAC President Kristen Confroy said. “It's so much fun for us as student-athletes and being able to contribute to TerpThon. We want to help out, and with out schedules it's difficult, but that's what makes this event even more special.”
Field Hockey kicked things off with a comedic dance ranging from Thriller to Taylor Swift before Idris White (wrestling) performed his original raps, with his team singing along from the crowd. Sami Main (softball) even created glitter art of the Maryland flag within the state outline before Caroline Augelli (women's track and field) gave a violin performance.
Even administrators and coaches got in on the act by playing charades and other guessing games, much to the athletes amusement.
The event was judged by Pride member Shaylah Koontz, the “M” Club Board Member Angie Perry, and former Maryland football player Anthony Nixon.
Women's basketball took home first place for the second straight year and was only one point shy of a unanimous victory. In second place, Jewel Smith tied with her teammates Gaston Assoua and Breanna Coleman (track and field) who performed slam poetry. White (wrestling) took home third place for his original rap performance.
