COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland gymnastics team honored seniors Emily Brauckmuller, Sarah Faller and Leah Slobodin as the Terps placed second in a quad meet Saturday afternoon. The Terrapins (195.475) picked up wins over Penn (193.425) and William & Mary (192.825). No. 9 Kentucky won the meet with a 195.850.
"We're getting better week-to-week and you can see the team's confidence going up," head coach Brett Nelligan said. "For such a young team to come in here and push a top-ranked team to the brink, I'm really proud of them. The team came in today wanting to perform well for the seniors, and I think we did them proud."
The Terps led midway through the meet and went down to the wire before Kentucky pulled ahead in the final rotation.
Maryland set season highs on vault (48.900) and floor (49.150) in the quad meet. The Terps scored over a 195 for the fourth straight meet. Maryland hasn't scored under the mark in the month of February.
Junior Evelyn Nee and freshman Alecia Farina tied for the uneven bars title with 9.825s. Faller finished tied for third on balance beam with a 9.850. The Terps had the top three finishes on floor as Farina and senior Emily Brauckmuller tied for first with 9.875s and sophomore Amanda Bertorello set a career high with a 9.850.
In her first career appearance in the all-around, Farina placed second with a 38.875. Freshman Kirsten Peterman set a career high with a 38.800 in the all-around.
The Terps began the meet on vault, where Peterman and freshman Deanna Magro led off with a pair of 9.700s. Brauckmuller and Farina each performed 9.775s while freshman Morgan Bixler and Faller led Maryland with 9.825s.
The team moved to bars, where the Terps didn't count a score under 9.700. Sophomore Megan McClelland tallied a 9.750 while Peterman and sophomore Shynelle Agaran each notched 9.775s. Nee and Farina anchored the rotation with a pair of 9.825s as the Terps posted a 97.850 midway through the meet.
On beam, Magro stuck her dismount and scored a 9.725. Faller anchored with a 9.850 as Maryland scored a 48.500 on the apparatus.
The Terps finished the meet strong on floor where the team tallied over a 49.000 for the second time this season. Peterman scored a 9.725 before Slobodin notched a 9.800. Bertorello performed a career-high 9.850. Farina and Brauckmuller closed the rotation with a pair of 9.875s.
Maryland returns to action at the Pink Invitational in Philadelphia next Friday. The Terps will take on Southern Connecticut State, West Chester, George Washington and Temple at 5 p.m.
