
Terps Hit the Track at Husker Invite, Armory Friday

The Maryland track and field programs were in action for the second straight weekend of split squad competition with athletes entered at the Husker Invitational and New York Armory Track Invitational Friday. Both events are set to resume tomorrow morning.

Husker Invitational
LINCOLN, Neb. – Freshman Dallyssa Huggins and junior Peyton Wade both shined in the pentathlon on day one of the Husker Invitational, finishing as the No. 2 and No. 3 attached athletes (respectively) in the event. Huggins finished first two different events to pace her first-ever collegiate pentathlon, topping the field in the 800 (2:13.53) and the shot put (13.57m) for a total of 4025 points.
Wade was the event's top high jumper clearing 1.77 meters, while taking second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.59) and third in the long jump (5.77m) to post 3955 points.
Senior Micha Powell starred for the Terps in the 400 meter run, going up against a deep field of competitors from across the country. Powell took third overall in the event, finishing in 54.43 in her second 400 meter race of the indoor season. Thaila Cooper took 24th (57.64).
Freshman Kameron Jones and senior Dahri Jahn-Richardson both held their own in a competitive field of runners in the men's 400, finishing 16th and 19th respectively. Jones was the third fastest freshman in the field with a mark of 49.11, while Jahn Richardson was not far behind with a 49.30 finish.
Senior Lisa Meneau took 11th in a loaded preliminary field of the 60 meter hurdles, posting a time of 8.61. Sophomore Jewel Smith came in at 9.02, junior Kayla Richardson finished in 9.12 and senior Taylor finished the event in 9.57.
Richardson and Smith went on to post top-15 finishes in the long jump, with Richardson taking ninth in the field with a leap of 5.66 meters. Smith was 13th after clearing 5.58 meters, while freshman Leah Blackall posted a jump of 5.04 meters.
Junior Chandler Baxter came in at 7.82 for a 26th place in the 60 meter dash.
Armory Invitational
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Freshman Kathryn Gearhart and Sydney Almeida went 4-6 in the women's 5000 to highlight day one of the New York Armory Invitational Friday. Gearhart clocked in with a personal-best 17:19.21 while Almeida was right on her heels, crossing the line in 17:24.93: the best of her indoor collegiate career.
Alexa Squirini finished 15th in the women's 1000 meter run with a time of 2:55.10, while teammates Vickie Ajimoko (2:59.17), Gaby Go (2:59.93) and Paige Novak (3:02.96) were all inside the top-40.
Junior Louis Corgliano set a new career-best in the men's 3000 meter run, going 8:22.78 to eclipse his previous career best by nearly nine seconds.
Sophomore Gaston Assoua led the way for Maryland in the men's long jump, posting a sixth place fnih in a field of over 40 with a leap of 7.09 meters. Fellow sophomore Drew Alfano was 28th with a jump of 6.47 meters.
Junior Claudia Ababio secured a top-10 finish in the shot put, throwing 14.31 to take ninth in the field.
