COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's lacrosse team will welcome its 1967 USILA Tri-National Championship team to College Park Saturday, April 29, for the Johns Hopkins game in commemoration of the 50th anniversary.
The 1967 squad, coached by John Howard, capped off an 8-1 season with a decisive 9-5 victory over rival Johns Hopkins. The result meant the Terrapins would share the National Championship with Johns Hopkins and Navy, who each had one loss on the season.
An excerpt from the Washington Post game recap written by William Gildea following the win over Johns Hopkins said: “From the beginning yesterday, it was apparent that Maryland had saved its best lacrosse until its final game. This was timely because, by overrunning Johns Hopkins from the opening faceoff for a 9-5 victory at Byrd Stadium, the Terrapins gained a share of the national title for the first time in eight years.”
Sophomore midfielder Doug Carter has one of his best games up to that point as a Terp, scoring the team's first three goals against Hopkins.
The Washington Post article also pointed to excellent defensive play by Maryland, as Bill Sbarra held the Blue Jays' Phil Kneip to just one goal and Norm Vander Schuyt made two stops on Joe Cowa.
All-American Jack Heim capped the scoring and closed his career by intercepting a clear pass by the Johns Hopkins goalie and scoring on an open net.
