ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Greg Thompson and senior Micha Powell of the Maryland track and field teams were named Big Ten Track and Field Performers of the Week today in a release made by the conference offices Wednesday. The honors are the first for both the men and women's teams this season.
Thompson was named the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Week after his record-setting performance in the discus at the Kehoe Twilight Meet on May 5. Thompson's throw of 60.28 meters (197-09) broke Alan Baginski's 34-year school record in the event (196-00 – 1983), as the London, England native took first in the event. Thompson now ranks 10th in the nation in the event.
Powell was named the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week after capping off her final home meet at Maryland with a win in the 400 meter dash. Powell's time of 53.20 topped the field at the Kehoe Twilight Meet, and currently ranks 18th in the East Region.
Thompson, Powell and the rest of the Maryland track and field program will return to action this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in University Park, Pa.
