COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland football team continues to amp up its intensity level as the season nears.
The Terps completed their 15th practice of fall camp on Friday and are now set for Saturday's open practice. It'll be the first chance for Maryland fans to get a look at the Terps since the Spring Game.
Looking back at the first scrimmage of fall and what lies ahead tomorrow, second-year Terps Head Coach
DJ Durkin realizes how important these scrimmages are.
"It was good seeing guys compete for jobs, especially with a young team," explained Durkin. "You start to build an understanding with all these practices, especially scrimmages. You're putting on tape what you're going to be and what you want to do. We saw some of that in (last week's) scrimmage. Guys learned from that coming out of that scrimmage and took it into practice this week. We're going to go scrimmage again
tomorrow and I'm pretty sure we'll be better in a lot of areas and make the improvements we need to make."
After ranking third in the Big Ten by averaging nearly 200 yards per game on the ground in 2016, Durkin is high on his running backs unit midway through fall camp.
"The freshmen are all really good, extremely talented football players," said Durkin. "But they sometimes do things as freshmen you'd expect. When you look at Ty (Johnson), LoLo (Lorenzo Harrison) and Jake (Funk), you have three proven players who are as good as anyone in the conference I think. So it's a good mix. Those guys do a good job as leaders and bringing the other guys along at the position. We want to utilize as many as we can."
Durkin is also pleased with how many players are pushing to be in the rotation on the defensive line.
"I think we're really deep on the defensive line," explained Durkin. "I think we're more than two-deep over there. We feel we have a lot of guys who can play and help us win."
The Terps could have a veteran group on the offensive line with 2016 starters
Brendan Moore,
Damian Prince,
Derwin Gray and
Terrance Davis returning. Durkin is also excited about the young guys pushing for playing time there.
"There's some good competition," said Durkin. "There are some freshmen who are creeping up there.
Marcus Minor,
Johnny Jordan and
Jordan McNair are a few. And for freshmen to be in the mix at the line of scrimmage, they have to be pretty darn good. That's probably the hardest position to come in and play right away."
Saturday's scrimmage is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. Fans are advised to park in Lot 1, which is free on weekends and is adjacent to the stadium. Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium can be accessed through Gate I. For a campus map,
