CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Maryland wrestling team won five matches, but fell to Illinois 25-18 in Big Ten dual match action at Huff Hall Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind early, the Terrapins (4-10, 0-8 Big Ten) evened up the dual through four matches after a pin from Ryan Diehl and a sudden victory win from Alfred Bannister. Illinois (5-3, 4-2 Big Ten) pulled away in the middle weights before Maryland won the final two matches. 

The Illini took their early lead via a pair of bonus-point wins at 125 and 133 pounds before the Terps fought back. Diehl came out firing against Dylan Thurston and eventually caught him for the fall at the 2:11 mark of the first period. Bannister battled with Eric Barone at 149 pounds, taking the lead with a takedown in the first period.

With the score tied in the third period, Bannister was consistently the aggressor, but could not finish off a couple of takedown attempts against Barone. Early in the sudden victory period, Bannister shot in and took down Barone to lock up a 5-3 decision.

Maryland fell behind after an Illinois fall at 157 pounds and a tech fall at 165 pounds. Josh Ugalde stemmed the tied at 174 with a 9-6 decision victory over David Riojas that saw the Maryland redshirt freshman rack up riding time and eventually stave off a late cahrge from Riojas.

Illinois finished off its team points with a tech fall at 184 pounds before Maryland nabbed two wins to end the dual. David-Brian Whisler won a hard fought match with Andre Lee at 197 with a sudden victory takedown. Youssif Hemida then completed the dual with a fairly routine 5-2 decision win over Duece Rachal.

Maryland returns to dual action at home, Sunday Feb. 11 against Minnesota. Action is set to get underway at 2 p.m.
