Maryland Mourns the Passing of Dick Modzelewski

EASTLAKE, Ohio -- Dick Modzelewski, a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and the Maryland Athletics Hall of fame, passed away on Friday.

Modzelewski ('53) was a unanimous First Team All-American for the Terps at tackle in 1952, the same year he was awarded the Outland Trophy as that nations best lineman.

In 1951, he garnered Second Team All-American honors along with his brother, Ed.

Known as "Lil Mo", Modzelewski stared for the Terps from 1950-52. In 1993 he was inducted into both the NFF College Hall of Fame and the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame.

As a pro, Modzelewski was a star defensive tackle who appeared in eight NFL title games with the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns during the 1950s and '60s. He spent 14 years in the NFL, including eight with the Giants that included six title games.

Modzelewski also appeared in two championship games with the Browns. He joined the NFL with Washington in 1953 and also played for Pittsburgh, never missing a game in his career.

He coached in the NFL for 22 years, including the 1978 season as the Giants' defensive coordinator.

Modzelewski, who was 87, is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Jane, and four children.

The funeral for Modzelewski is set for Oct. 26 in Mentor, Ohio.
