ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Freshman Brett St. Martin scored the first goal of his career to tie the match in the 78th minute, but the Maryland men's soccer team fell in overtime to Michigan, 2-1, at U-M Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (7-6-3, 4-4-0 Big Ten) fell behind after an own goal in the first half. The Terps turned up the pressure in the second stanza, which resulted in St. Martin's tally. Jack Hallahan ended the match for Michigan in the first minute of overtime.
Maryland's first good chance came in the 16th minute. A pass down the right flank released junior Paul Bin, who fired a good right-footed effort that forced a save. Bin then combined with Amar Sejdic and Eric Matzelevich down the right, with Matzelevich finding a decent chance in the box in the 30th minute.
The Terps' deficit was self-inflicted in the 34th minute. A hard cross to the back post forced Pines to attempt a clearing diving header, but his attempt went past Dayne St. Clair and the post and into the net.
After a sensational goal line clearace from Matt Di Rosa early in the second frame, the Terps pressed hard for the tying tally. Matzelevich was set up by Sejdic through the middle but shot wide in the 63rd minute. Sejdic had a go of his own inside the box a couple minute later at was parried.
Brayan Padilla had a golden chance in the 67th minute. Fellow freshman Justin Gielen played his classmate in on the left channel, but Padilla's effort from 10 yard out flashed high.
Maryland found the tying goal in the 78th minute. Eli Crognale played in a solid corner that Pines headed off the cross bar. St. Martin corralled the rebound and smashed it in from point blank range.
Just 27 seconds into overtime, Jack Hallahan slotted the ball past St. Clair to end the game.
Maryland has received the No. 5 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will play fourth-seeded Michigan State in the quarterfinal round next Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in East Lansing.
