UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team (13-1, 4-1 B1G) fell at No. 7 Penn State, 3-1, Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions' defense stopped Maryland's 13-game win streak.
Â
"We definitely learned some great lessons," head coach
Missy Meharg. "Penn State collapsed on every ball and was so effective in team defense. Maryland stumbled with getting normal intensity we've been playing with to do so well. We were a little sloppy. It's an opportunity to look at our intensity to play urgent and to look at some things to do tactically."
Â
Penn State (9-3, 4-1) struck first when Abby Myers got behind the Terps' defense and buried a shot for the first score 24 minutes in. The Nittany Lions led 1-0 at halftime.
Â
Penn State added its second goal when Anna Simon scored off a penalty corner in the 51
st minute. Five minutes later, the Nittany Lions added their third goal when Moira Putsch deflected in a shot off another penalty corner. Penn State took a 3-0 lead with just under 15 minutes remaining.
Â
With 4:29 to go, junior
Nike Lorenz asked for a review of a play inside the circle and the Terrapins were awarded a penalty stroke. Lorenz buried the penalty shot for the Terps' goal.
Â
Maryland took 13 shots to Penn State's 11 and picked up five penalty corners to the Nittany Lions' eight.
Â
Senior goalkeeper

Â
Sophomore
Bodil Keus earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, Lorenz was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and
Bibi Donraadt was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Keus was also named Longstreth/NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week Wednesday.
