Terps Knock Off #14 Northwestern on Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Jarena Harmon and freshman Loren Sefcik both netted first half goals while Maryland held off No. 14 Northwestern in the second to clinch a 2-1 upset win Sunday afternoon. The victory was the first over a ranked team for the Terps (3-8-4, 2-4-1) since 2014, while the team gained valuable ground in the Big Ten table with the win.

It didn't take long for Maryland to break into the scoring column on senior day Sunday, getting a 16th minute goal from Harmon to take an early lead. After Darby Moore played her through the center of the field from the left side, Harmon took advantage of a one-on-one opportunity beating the Northwestern keeper into the right corner.

The early momentum continued for the hosts into the 34th minute, after Hope Lewandoski found a streaking Loren Sefcik down the right wing. Sefcik took a narrow angle on her shot from outside the 18, nailing the left side of the net to notch her first career goal and put the Terps ahead 2-0.

Maryland would keep a clean sheet heading into halftime, but the No. 14 Wildcats managed to break through with a goal in the 54th minute. A cross from Marisa Viggiano found the head of Brenna Lovera, and the visitors would come within one with more than 35 minutes to play in the second.

Maryland's defense came through when it mattered, as senior goalie Rachel Egyed made five of her seven saves in the game down the stretch of the second half.

The Cllifton, N.J. made two of her most crucial plays minutes apart, first punching out a dangerous corner in the 71st minute to thwart a potential scoring chance from Northwestern. She followed it up with a diving save in the 73rd, blocking a hard hit shot over the goal to keep her side ahead.

Northwestern would continue to pressure as regulation wound down, but Maryland kept its defensive shape and picked its spots on the counter attack to eventually earn the 2-1 win.

Kady Badham, Jenna Surdick, Harmon and Egyed were all honored alongside their friends and family in a pregame ceremony for senior day.

The Terrapins will return to action on the road on Friday, October 12 when the team travels to University Park, Pa. to face Penn State.

Notes:

Maryland's  last win over a team ranked in the top-25 came on September 25, 2014 when the Terps earned a 1-0 win at #13 Iowa.
