ATLANTA – Junior
Kaila Charles of the Maryland women's basketball team was named to the Citizen Naismith Trophy Women's Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Monday.
Charles is one of 50 candidates to be named to the watch list. The winner of the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 6, 2019.
Charles was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team, as well as a member of the Miller Award Watch List. She earned preseason honors last year as well. At the end of the season, she was named to the All-Big Ten First Team.
Charles led the Terrapins in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (8.1) last season. Her 17.9 points per game was the most-ever by a Terrapin sophomore. She has started in all 69 games of her career and has scored 982 career points so far.
Founded during the 1956-57 season, the Atlanta Tipoff Club is committed to promoting the game of basketball and recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of those who make the game so exciting. The Atlanta Tipoff Club administers the Naismith Awards, the most prestigious national honors in all of college and high school basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the family of Naismith Awards annually recognizes the top men's and women's college and high school basketball players and coaches.
Maryland was picked to win the Big Ten by both the league's head coaches and media panel, the conference announced Monday.
The Terps return four of five starters from last year's NCAA Tournament squad and have opened up the 2018-19 season going 2-0 with wins over Coppin State and Dayton.
The Terrapins come in at No. 6 in the Lindy's poll and No. 9 in the Street & Smith's poll. Charles was named to the Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Second Team.
