
Hemida Ready for U23 World Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior heavyweight Youssif Hemida will represent the United States this weekend, wrestling in the U23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania.
Hemida will wrestle in the 125 KG bracket, a spot he earned after finishing first at the U23 World Team trials with a 7-0 record. His run included an 11-0 technical fall victory in his second championship bout. Hemida outscored his opponents 79-19 over the course of the tournament.
Brackets for the 125 KG class will be drawn on Friday, with wrestling set to begin Saturday morning with the qualification rounds. Those advancing from the qualification rounds will then wrestle in the semifinal round later Saturday afternoon. The finals for the 125 KG class will be on Sunday.

Hemida is coming off a breakout season for the Terrapins where he won a team-best 30 matches and earned All-American status. He placed at the Big Ten Tournament and was an NCAA Qualifier for the second-consecutive season. His season also saw him win the Road Runner Open heavyweight bracket and also place third in the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The New York native led the Maryland roster in dual wins and conference victories. He also had the second-most pins on the roster with nine. He knocked off seven ranked wrestlers, including Lehigh's Jordan Wood to earn his All-American status.
The senior was a unanimous top-five wrestler in the heavyweight class following the NCAA wrestling preseason rankings.
