COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior heavyweight
Youssif Hemida advanced to the Gold Medal Match of the U23 Freestyle World Championships after posting a 3-0 record in the event on Saturday.
Hemida captured a takedown in the final 10 seconds of his semifinal bout to clinch a 4-2 victory and a spot in Sunday's championship bout.
The senior got off to a fast start to begin the day, winning 6-1 in his opening round over Yasuhiro Yamamoto of Japan. That win put Hemida in the quarterfinals, where he would meet Moldova's Samhan Jabrailov. Hemida was dominant in the quarterfinal, pinning Jabrailov at the 3:24 mark to move on to the semifinal round.
The semifinal bout against Georgia's Rolandi Andriadze was tight throughout, with Hemida taking a slim 1-0 lead into the break after Andriadze couldn't score on a shot clock. Hemida was then put on the shot clock early in the second period and couldn't score, tying the bout at one. Andriadze then took his first lead of the bout after earning a point on a step out. Hemida was able to return the favor, tying the score with just 30 seconds left in the match.
With just 10 seconds remaining, Hemida found the bout's only takedown, scoring two points and advancing with a 4-2 victory.
The New York native will wrestle in Sunday's Gold Medal match, meeting Russia's Said Gamid Gamidov, who also won in the semifinal by a score of 4-2.
