BUCHAREST -- Senior heavyweight Youssif Hemida earned a silver medal after a second-place finish in the 125 KG bracket at the U23 World Championships on Sunday. Hemida ended the weekend with a 3-1 record in his first international competition.
"I'm extremely proud of Youssif," Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy said. "It's awesome for him to bring home a medal. He set his goal, worked hard for it and gave it his all. That's all you can do. This experience has been fantastic for him and will certainly propel him to more success in the future."
The returning NCAA All-American lost by fall to 2015 Junior World Champion Said Gamid Gamidov of Russia. In his three victories prior, Hemida outscored opponents 15-3.
The senior got off to a fast start to begin the day on Saturday, winning 6-1 in his opening round over Yasuhiro Yamamoto of Japan. That win put Hemida in the quarterfinals, where he would meet Moldova's Samhan Jabrailov. Hemida was dominant in the quarterfinal, pinning Jabrailov at the 3:24 mark to move on to the semifinal round.
The semifinal bout against Georgia's Rolandi Andriadze was tight throughout, with Hemida taking a slim 1-0 lead into the break after Andriadze couldn't score on a shot clock. Hemida was then put on the shot clock early in the second period and couldn't score, tying the bout at one. Andriadze then took his first lead of the bout after earning a point on a step out. Hemida was able to return the favor, tying the score with just 30 seconds left in the match.
With just 10 seconds remaining, Hemida found the bout's only takedown, scoring two points and advancing with a 4-2 victory.
Hemida will now rejoin his Maryland teammates, with the dual schedule beginning on Dec. 2 at Penn.
