COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's golf team is currently ranked in the top 50 teams in the nation according to Golfweek and Golfstat. This is the second time in program history, and first since the 2005-06 season the Terrapins are ranked among the 50 best teams in the country.
The Terrapins come in at No. 48 in the Golfstat rankings and No. 49 in the Golfweek rankings.
"Being successful takes time, passion and dedication," head coach Diana Cantu said. "We have a great group of student-athletes lead by an outstanding senior class who is hungry to make the NCAA postseason. Ludovica Farina and Ludovica Scandroglio have been crucial to the continued improvement of this program and it would mean the world to me if this team can continue to work hard through the spring semester for them. We want to give our seniors the best semester of their careers.
"I am very proud of all that we have achieved so far. It hasn't been easy and we still have a long way to go. Nonetheless, we represented Maryland very well this past fall and we look forward to continuing to do so in the spring season. Being inside the Top-50 is just a little glimpse of where this program is going. College golf is extremely competitive and it's harder each year to be considered a competitive program. We are here to stay."
Cantu, now in her fifth season leading the Terrapins, welcomed back former Terrapin golfer Emily Gimpel as an assistant coach this summer.
The Terrapins are coming off of a fall slate, in which they finished second in Louisville's Cardinal Cup. Sophomore Virunpat Olankitkunchai tied for second in two events. The Terps, all Cantu recruits, racked up 12 top 25 finishes in the fall.
Last year, Maryland went shot-for-shot with Michigan State and finished second in the Big Ten championships – the Terrapins best finish in the conference tournament.
Earlier last season, the Terps won the Penn State Invitational for their first team-win since 2012. Then-freshman Laura Van Respaille won the individual title.
The Terrapins open their spring slate at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R. Feb. 10-12, 2019.
