Football Holds Annual Celebration & Awards Reception

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team held its annual team celebration and awards reception on Saturday night at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

Members of the team, staff and program supporters enjoyed an evening of looking back at highlights from the 2018 season, handing out awards and recognizing the senior class.

Former Terp greats were in attendance and also recorded video messages to present the 2018 award winners.

Ken Roy, a star on the 1976 Cotton Bowl team, started the evening by announcing the 2018 Maryland football captains. Voted on by the team, senior wide receiver Taivon Jacobs, senior center Brendan Moore, senior defensive back Darnell Savage, Jr. and senior linebacker Tre Watson were bestowed the honor.

A special moment occurred between awards when offensive linemen Johnny Jordan and Marcus Minor took the stage to introduce the Jordan McNair Memorial Award.

"We are proud to be here to introduce a new award for the Maryland Football Celebration," said the linemen. "The Jordan McNair Award for Courage will be given to the player who reflects the spirit of our teammate, Jordan McNair. The recipient will show great professionalism athletically and academically, dedication to his team, strength in the face of immense adversity, as well as courage and conviction to do the right thing."

The first recipient of the Jordan McNair Memorial Award will be presented in 2019.

All-American William Likely III presented the Defensive Player of the Year Award to Tre Watson. The graduate transfer linebacker led the Big Ten in both total tackles and interceptions.

Two-time Super Bowl Champion Torrey Smith provided a message to present the Offensive Player of the Year Award, which was given to Anthony McFarland Jr. The running back finished his record-breaking freshman campaign with 1,034 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He set Maryland freshman records for most rushing yards in a game (298 vs. Ohio State) and most rushing yards in a season.

The final award of the night was presented by Super Bowl MVP and NFL Hall of Famer Randy White, who recorded a video for the Ray Krouse Memorial Award, which was given to the team's Most Valuable Player. For the fourth time on Saturday, Watson's named was called as the linebacker was selected as the teams MVP.
