Locksley Inks Six Student-Athletes During Early Signing Period

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland Head Coach Michael Locksley announced that six student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play football for the Terrapins during the early signing period, which began on Wednesday.
The class features five players from the DMV, including consensus four-star wide receiver Isaiah Hazel, who is rated as the top offensive player in the state of Maryland by both ESPN and 247Sports. Hazel, a member of the ESPN300, also had offers from Alabama, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
The Terps also inked a pair of defensive backs, Deonte Banks from Edgewood High School and Lavonte Gater from Ballou. Banks is ranked as the No. 12 overall player in the state of Maryland by ESPN, while Gater is a consensus 3-star recruit that is listed as the No. 8 overall player in DC by Rivals.
Maryland added some size by signing 6-5, 305-pound offensive lineman Mason Lunsford and 6-4, 225-pound tight end Malik Jackson. Lunsford, a 2018 First Team All-Met and First Team All-WCAC selection, is rated as the second highest offensive tackle in the state of Maryland according to Rivals. Jackson is listed as the top tight end in the state of Maryland by 247Sports.
The Terps also inked Michael "Dino" Tomlin, who is ranked as the fourth best wide receiver in the state of Pennsylvania according to 247Sports. Tomlin, whose uncle, Ed, played for the Terps in 1989, averaged 35 yards per catch and scored 18 touchdowns en route to being named first team all-conference during his senior season at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh.
The remainder of Maryland's 2019 signing class will be announced on February 6.
