
Shakira Austin Earns Fourth Weekly Honor

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Forward Shakira Austin of the fourth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (11-0) earned her second straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor Monday.
Austin has earned four of the seven Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors so far this season, including last week's.
In first career start Thursday, Austin led the Terrapins to a convincing 77-53 road win at Delaware. She scored Maryland's first four points and finished with a team-high 17 points, 13 rebounds and tied the school record eight blocks. She went 6-for-9 from the field and added two assists and a steal. With the win, the Terps finished their non-conference slate at 11-0.
Austin currently leads the Big Ten and is fourth in the country in blocks per game with 3.18. She is 13th in the nation in rebounds per game with 11.9 per contest.
Maryland is ranked No. 4 in both the Associated Press poll and the USA Today Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 17th season as the head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 440-119 (.787). She is three wins from 500 in her 20-year head coaching career with a record of 497-149 (.769).
After a holiday break, the Terrapins will open Big Ten play with a road trip to Penn State (7-4) on Friday. The Terps and the Lady Lions will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center.
