HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Redshirt junior
Josh Ugalde upset two seeded wrestlers to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals at the 56th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Saturday.
Ugalde topped 14th-seeded Andrew Morgan (Campbell) and third-seeded Johnny Sebastian (Northwestern) on his way to the quarterfinals. He will now meet sixth-seeded Brit Wilson (Northern Illinois) in Saturday evening's quarterfinal round. There have now been two consecutive years where a Maryland wrestler advanced to the quarterfinals. Senior heavyweight
Youssif Hemida advanced to the round in the 2017 event.
Maryland saw six wrestlers advance to the Round of 16, with each earning at least one victory in the championship bracket.
Alfred Bannister,
Philip Spadafora and
Adam Whitesell each picked up a pair of victories, while Ugalde,
Ryan Diehl and
Kyle Jasenski each earned one win before advancing to the Round of 16.
Those six -- along with
Brandon Cray,
Danny Bertoni and
Jahi Jones -- will all wrestle in Saturday's second session. Ugalde is Maryland's lone representative in the championship bracket, while the others will now look to advance through the consolation flight and earn a spot in placing matches on Sunday.
Maryland impressed in the opening stages of the session, with Bannister, Cray and Whitesell each picking up a victory by way of fall in the first slate of matches. The day also featured the season debut of redshirt senior
Ryan Diehl, who won his season-opener against Luke Raczkowski (Central Michigan).
Freshmen
Orion Anderson and
King Sandoval each picked up a win in their Midlands debuts. Anderson beat Jared Van Vleet (Air Force) with a 12-7 decision, while Sandoval, who is wrestling unattached, topped Perez Perez (Iowa), 9-4.
Senior heavyweight
Youssif Hemida, who was the No. 2 seed in his flight, withdrew before the competition began with an illness.
The Terrapins are currently 13th in the team race with 24.5 points. They sit just a single point behind Campbell and two behind Arizona State.
