Kyle Jasenski
RFr. || 184 lbs.
Schenectady, N.Y.
Jasenski has had a strong start to the season, winning a title at the ESU Open and earning a victory in his dual match debut at Penn.

LAST TIME OUT

Maryland opened its 2018-19 dual slate last Sunday, traveling to Penn to take on the Quakers. The Terrapins earned a pair of wins, but fell to a talented Penn squad, 26-6.

Kyle Jasenski got the Terps off to a fast start in the dual, winning the first bout of the dual at 184 pounds. Jasenski earned a 7-5 decision to pick up the win in his first dual action as a Terrapin.

Redshirt senior Adam Whitesell also picked up a win in the match. After exploding for a 12-point first period, Whitesell then fended off a strong offensive attack from his opponent to earn a 12-10 victory.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN

Navy comes to College Park following a trip to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, where they placed 17th out of 43 squads.

Navy placed two wrestlers in the event: 174-pounder Spencer Carey (5th) and 149-pounder Jared Prince (8th). Nicholas Gil finished one bout shy of placing, falling to Virginia's Samuel Krivus in the blood round.

The Mids have wrestled in one dual up to this point, falling to third-ranked Ohio State in a match that took place at the McDonogh School.

Joshua Roetman and Jacob Allen earned the two victories for the Midshipmen. Roetman won with an impressive pin at 197, while Allen got his dual career started with a decision victory.

SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS

Prior to coming to Maryland, Central Michigan will wrestle at Virginia on Friday, Dec. 7. Before coming to the east coast, the Chippewas last action took place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

184-pounder Jordan Atienza and heavyweight Matt Stencel led the way for CMU, with each wrestling into the Saturday-morning consolation round. Atienza finished the event with four wins, while Stencel tallied three.

Central Michigan's lone dual action ended in a 32-12 loss to Michigan. A trio of Chippewas earned wins: 125-pounder Drew Hildebrandt, 157-pounder Logan Parks, and heavyweight Matt Stencel.

Stencel will lead the way for CMU, entering the dual with Maryland as the 19th-ranked heavyweight in the country according to InterMat.

EARLY ACTION

Despite not wrestling in dual competition in the first month of the regular season, Maryland has taken part in four open tournaments. The Terrapins have placed at least one wrestler in each of the four events, headlined by three first-place finishes.

Alfred Bannister kicked off his redshirt senior campaign with a championship run at the Princeton Open. Redshirt freshman Kyle Jasenski then took home the 184-pound title at the ESU Open. Rounding out the trio is redshirt freshman Hunter Baxter, who took home top honors at the Mat Town Open.

The Terrapins also placed four wrestlers at the ESU Open. Adam Whitesell led Maryland's performance at the Wolfpack Open, finishing in fourth place.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

Senior heavyweight Youssif Hemida brought home a silver medal after his performance in the U23 World Championships. Hemida posted a 3-1 record in the event, which took place in Bucharest, Romania.

The New York native opened his first international event with a 3-0 record before falling to 2015 World Junior Champion Said Gamid Gamidov of Russia. Hemida outscored his opponents 15-3 in his first three bouts.

AN EXPERIENCED BUNCH

The Terps will be returning 16 wrestlers who started a dual match last season, led by three NCAA Championship participants: Alfred Bannister, Ryan Diehl and Youssif Hemida.

Maryland also returns Brandon Cray, Kyle Cochran, Danny Bertoni, Brendan Burnham, Jahi Jones, Josh Ugalde, Jaron Smith, Niko Cappello and David-Brian Whisler.

The three B1G placers and NCAA Qualifiers (Bannister, Diehl and Hemida) have all qualified for the national tournament in two-consecutive seasons.

#MOOSETIME

Senior heavyweight Youssif Hemida will look to build off his All-American 2017-18 campaign this season. He is expected to be one of the top contenders in the heavyweight class, joining Big Ten foes Sam Stoll (Iowa) and Nick Nevills (Penn State).

The New York native is coming off a season that featured a team-best 30 victories, which included a 15-1 dual record. He also tied for the second-most pins on the team with nine.

BABY'S BACK

Redshirt senior Alfred "Baby J" Bannister is gearing up for his final campaign in College Park. Bannister is coming off a second-consecutive placing at the Big Ten Championships and has also qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons.

He tallied an impressive 23 victories last season, including nine by way of fall. The Marylander rode a heater at the end of the season, knocking off a pair of ranked wrestlers at the Big Ten Championships to earn his spot in the national tournament.

THE REAL DIEHL

Rounding out Maryland's "Big Three" is redshirt senior Ryan Diehl, who is fresh off his second-consecutive Big Ten placing and NCAA Championships appearance. Diehl finished last season with the second-most dual wins and conference victories on the roster.

His season was headlined by an upset win over ninth-seeded Nick Lee of Penn State in the NCAA Championships. Diehl stuck the Nittany Lion in the opening period to secure one of the biggest upsets of the weekend.

WELCOME TO MARYLAND, SHELTON MACK

In August, head coach Kerry McCoy announced the addition of Shelton Mack to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. Mack coached at Virginia for the previous three seasons after completing his collegiate career at Pittsburgh. His time at UVA included developing a pair of NCAA All-Americans.

While wrestling at Pittsburgh, Mack was a three-time NCAA qualifier. He posted a career-best 26 wins in his senior campaign.

OFFSEASON OFFERINGS

It was a busy summer for Maryland wrestling head coach Kerry McCoy.

In Mary, McCoy was presented the Penn State Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes the achievements of outstanding PSU Alumni.

McCoy also increased his involvement with USA Wrestling, coaching the Junior Pan Am Freestyle team in Brazil, as well as assuming the role of Secretary of USA Wrestling.

REDSHIRT REVIEW

A handful of wrestlers will be looking to get into the varsity competition after serving a redshirt year in 2017-18.

Philip Spadafora finished last season with the fourth-most wins on the team (18) and tied for the most technical fall victories on the roster. He finished third at the Princeton Open, fourth at the ESU Open and F&M Open, and first at the Messiah Open.

Kyle Jasenski also performed well in his redshirt season. He tallied 15 wins and tied for the second-most major decision victories on the team. Jasenski finished fourth in the 174-pound bracket at the Mat Town Open.

Hunter Baxter also found success while redshirting last season. He earned a fourth-place finish at three events: the ESU Open, Mat Town Open and Messiah Open.

HOME SWEET HOME

Maryland's 2018-19 roster boasts 17 wrestlers from the state of Maryland. This is the most on a Terrapin roster since there were 16 Marylanders on the 2014-15 squad.
