COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men's lacrosse senior midfielder Connor Kelly and sophomore attackman Jared Bernhardt have been named to the 2018 Tewaaraton Watch List.
The Tewaaraton Award annually recognizes the most outstanding player in college lacrosse. Last season, Matt Rambo became the first Maryland player to win the award since it was first introduced in 2001.
Both Kelly and Bernhardt have posted 19 points through four games this season, in addition to each posting 17 points in separate three-game stretches this year. Kelly and Bernhardt are just the fifth and sixth Terrapins since 2000 to post at least 16 points in a three-game stretch, and the first teammates to do it in the same season.
Kelly has totaled 19 points on 10 goals and nine assists through four games in 2018, including an incredible eight point performance (4G/4A) against Marist on Feb. 13. Kelly's has displayed his improved vision this season, after totaling just 11 assists last season when he was a USILA First Team All-America. In 2017, Kelly scored 46 goals, which was the most for Maryland midfielder in history.
Bernhardt's 19 points have come by way of a team-best 12 goals and seven assists, in addition to a seven point effort against Marist. The Longwood, Fla., native has seamlessly transitioned to his natural attack position after earning USILA Honorable Mention All-America honors as a freshman at midfield in 2017.
The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 22 and April 5. On April 26, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 10 and invited to the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on May 31.
