
Maryland Faces UNC Saturday in California

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 2 Maryland men's lacrosse team returns to Southern California for the third time in four seasons to play North Carolina in the Pacific Coast Shootout in Costa Mesa, Calif., Saturday at 10:00 pm EST. The game is a battle between the last two NCAA champions. The Terps are 1-1 in the event, including a 10-8 victory over the Tar Heels in 2015.
BY THE NUMBERS
4 - Maryland has defeated North Carolina in four of its last five meetings, including a 15-7 victory last season in Chapel Hill. The teams have met annually since their inaugural game in 1964, with the Terps holding a 43-25 all-time advantage. Maryland won the first 17 meetings of the series between 1964 and 1980.
4 - The Terrapins have become accustomed to playing ahead this season, trailing for just 4:29 of a possible 420 minutes through seven games. Maryland is currently outscoring opponents 29-10 in the first quarter and 54-25 in the first half.
5 - Sophomore Jared Bernhardt tallied five points against No. 5 Villanova to continue his excellent start to the 2018 season. He now has a team-high 21 goals through seven games, in addition to nine assists. In 19 starts as a freshman, Bernhardt had 20 goals and eight assists.
7 - Senior Connor Kelly currently ranks seventh in the country with 21 assists after posting five helpers over his last two games. It's an impressive feat through six games for Kelly, who had just 11 as a First Team All-American in 2017. In fact, Kelly had just 27 assists in his career (58 games) prior to 2018.
17 - Freshman faceoff specialist Justin Shockey won a career-high 17 faceoffs last weekend against Villanova in addition to picking up nine ground balls. Shockey currently ranks second among freshmen nationally with a 56.8 faceoff winning percentage.
18 - Senior midfielder Connor Kelly has had great success against North Carolina, totaling 18 points over his last four games on 12 goals and six assists. Kelly's first breakout game was against UNC in the 2015 NCAA quarterfinals as a freshman, when he scored a hat trick (he had five goals the entire season).
67 - The Maryland extra-man unit continues to lead the country with a 67-percent conversion rate after a 2-for-3 day against No. 5 Villanova. Freshman Logan Wisnauskas and sophomore Jared Bernhardt each have four man-up goals, while Connor Kelly has three. Wisnauskas' 2.43 goals/g average ranks third nationally among freshmen.
100 - Senior midfielder Connor Kelly scored three goals against No. 5 Villanova last weekend to reach 100 for his career, joining the legendary Frank Urso (1973-76) as the only midfielders in Maryland history to achieve the feat. Urso finished with 127 in his career. Kelly is the 14th Terrapin overall to reach the 100-goal milestone.
