COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The second test of Big Ten Conference play for the No. 2 Maryland men's lacrosse team resides in State College, Pa., Sunday night as it takes on No. 18 Penn State. Maryland is 35-0 all-time against the Nittany Lions in a series that dates back to the Terps' inaugural 1924 season. The Terps are 5-0 against PSU since the start of the Big Ten in 2015.
BY THE NUMBERS
2 - Saturday's meeting matches a pair of former Terps against each other on the sidelines, as Maryland DC Jesse Bernhardt ('13) takes on Penn State OC John Haus ('13). Both were USILA First Team All-Americans as seniors in 2013.
4 - Senior Connor Kelly has scored four goals in each of his last three meetings against the Nittany Lions, totaling 14 points in that span. Kelly was particularly impressive in last season's Big Ten Tournament semifinals, when he had a hand in each of the Terps' last five goals en route to winning tournament MVP honors.
4 - Maryland has displayed a strong ability to build and sustain early leads, trailing for just 4:29 of a possible 540 minutes through nine games. Maryland is currently outscoring opponents 33-11 in the first quarter and 63-30 in the first half.
5 - Attackman Logan Wisnauskas totaled five points on three goals and two assists last weekend against Michigan to earn his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod of the season. Wisnauskas has scored a goal in every game to open his collegiate career, and has tallied multiple points in 8-of-9 games.
6 - Maryland committed just six turnovers last weekend against Michigan, marking the fifth time in nine games it has had less than 10 turnovers. The Terps lead the nation in fewest turnovers (9.6/g).
10 - Maryland has scored at least 10 goals in all nine games this season. The Terrapin offense is among the most steady forces in the country, leading the nation in fewest turnovers (9.6/g), and ranking second in man-up (.630), while ranking fourth in shooting percentage (36.4). Its an impressive feat considering the team lost its entire starting attack line from 2017.
12 - The Maryland defense has allowed just 12 goals over the last two weeks, holding UNC and Michigan to a combined 22 percent shooting. Additionally, the Terrapin man-down unit has now allowed a goal in its last four games (10 attempts).
14 - The Terrapins are 14-2 in Big Ten regular season play since the league formed in 2015, and 18-3 overall including the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland has claimed at least a share of five regular season and tournament titles combined in the first three years.
63 - The Maryland extra-man unit ranks second in the country with a 63-percent conversion rate. Freshman Logan Wisnauskas, sophomore Jared Bernhardt and senior Connor Kelly each have four man-up goals this season, all tying for the Big Ten lead.
