COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A couple all-stars, a boy scout and a Wild left footed tally. It is time to check in on the numerous Terps plying their trade at the next level.
Zusi, Steffen Named MLS All Stars
Two guys that get a lot of (deserved) attention in MLS are former Terps Graham Zusi and Zack Steffen and the pair put their names up in lights once again after being named to the 2018 MLS All Star team this weekend. The best of the USA's top league will face off with Italian giants Juventus on August 1 at Mercedes Benz Stadium.
Zusi earned his sixth MLS All-Star nod and will start the match after being selected as part of the MLS Fan XI. The 31-year old has played every minute of all 17 MLS matches for a Sporting KC that has been atop the Western Conference for 15 consecutive weeks. Now playing right back after spending much of his career farther up the pitch, Zusi has logged two goals, one assists while placing first among defenders in chances created.
Steffen was a coach's selection to the squad after Atlanta United goalkeeper Brad Guzan won the goalkeeper fan vote. Steffen has made 14 appearances for the Crew this season, notching 30 saves and seven shutouts. The 23-year old set a Crew club record for longest shutout streak, going 525 minutes without giving up a goal. The streak is the eighth longest in MLS history.
Ambrose Makes Most of Chance in ATL
In front of 71,392 rowdy fans at Atlanta's Mercedes Benz Stadium, Mikey Ambrose made the most of a huge opportunity in a rivalry match against Orlando City FC. Ambrose was named Man of the Match after notching an assist and a big goal-line clearance in Atlanta's comprehensive 4-0 win Saturday.
The former Terps star gained his starting role after an injury to Greg Garza and has impressed current Atlanta United and former Argentina and Barcelona manager Tata Martino with his ability to step up for the squad.
"Recently in an interview I was asked about Mikey, and I said Mikey's like a boy scout," Martino said "He's always prepared. Even when he's called on in isolated instances to play, he's always ready. Now that he's playing more consistently he's even more ready to contribute."
Ambrose will look to continue his strong run of form for The Five Stripes, who lead MLS with 37 points through 18 matches played.
Gonzalez Makes Mexico Move
After appearing 63 times for Liga MX club Pachuca, Omar Gonzalez secured a move to fellow Mexican side Atlas. The centerback makes the switch after a successful spell with Pachuca as he helped the club win a Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League title.
Wild On the Scoresheet
After being selected by Atlanta United in the MLS Super Draft, Gordon Wild went on loan to USL side Charleston Battery and has rediscovered his goal scoring form. The German forward has four tallies so far this season, good for second on the team.
Fans in College Park can rest assured that Wild's favorite left foot is still effective as ever. He finished off Charleston's 4-0 rout of Toronto FC II with this deflected left-footed finish.
