CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Maryland women's golf team wrapped up at the College of Charleston's Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, S.C. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to the impending threat of Hurricane Florence.
Senior Ludovica Farina led the way for Maryland with her +2 score of 146 (74-72). She moved up 10 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 36th.
Freshman Elena Verticchio and sophomore Charlotte Lafourcade both finished with score of 147, which was three strokes over par. They both shot a 76 in the first round, then went five strokes better with a one-under score of 71 in the second.
Junior Xiaolin Tian earned a score of 150 (76-74), which was six strokes over. Sophomore Virunpat Olankitkunchai finished with a combined score of 151 (76-75), which was +7.
As a team under head coach Diana Cantu's leadership, the Terrapins improved their team score by 14 strokes and went even in Monday's second round from 302 to 288. They ended with an overall score of 590.
"After a disappointing first round, I am proud of the team for coming back and shooting even par on the second round," Head Coach Diana Cantu said. "Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to continue to climb up the leaderboard as they cancelled our third round due to weather. I think this team is capable of shooting even par every time we tee it up. We are looking forward to tuning up a few parts of our games before our next event in Knoxville. We will be ready."
Next, Maryland will compete in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn. Sept. 16-18.
