COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Wisconsin notched a late equalizer and an overtime winner to come from behind and beat the Maryland men's soccer team, 2-1, at Ludwig Field Friday night.
The Terrapins (2-2-2, 1-1-0 Big Ten) dominated the first half and were rewarded with a Paul Bin goal early in the stanza. The Badgers (3-4-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) came on in the second half and scored the leveler with just 53 seconds remaining in regulation before Zack Klancnik won the game for the away side with a golden goal in the 107th minute.
"We dominated the entire first half and only came away with one goal," head coach Sasho Ciroski said. "We never felt like we were in any real danger, but then they got one moment there and tied it up. I still think we had chances in the overtime, but we played into their hands. We allowed them some set pieces and they got the goal on a well-served ball. It's a really bitter feeling knowing we deserved better out of this game, but we also didn't do what we needed to do to close out the game."
Maryland were in total control of proceedings in the opening 45 minutes and found the breakthrough in the seventh minute. Sophomore Eric Matzelevich received a throw in inside the box and posted up a defender before slipping a pass to William James Herve. The freshman slid a cross into the path of Bin and the junior finished from close range. It was the first tally of Bin's career.
The Terps continued to press forward. Bin got a good chance in the 10th minute, but his hard strike went wide. Senior Amar Sejdic found himself in a good position in the box after a cross in the 36th minute, but his effort was saved.
While Wisconsin started to find the game a bit in the second half, the Terps still were mostly in control in most stages. Matzelevich almost finished off the game, but was unable to find the net with his flick of a great Bin cross.
Michael Russell tied the game in the dying moments off an Andrew Akindele cross. In the 107th minute, Klancnik was able to stuff the ball home after his initial attempt was saved by Dayne St. Clair to end the game.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday night at Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and fans can watch the action live on BTN Plus.
