COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Brenda Frese announced two promotions and the addition of a new member to the Maryland women's basketball staff Thursday.
Director of Scouting and Player Development Kaitlynn Fratz will take over as interim assistant coach for the season. Director of Video Sean Ehlbeck will now serve as the Director of Video and Scouting. Former Michigan State All-Big Ten honoree Tori Jankoska joined the Terrapins staff recently as the Director of Player Personnel and Recruiting Operations.
"These three are truly rising stars in the coaching world," Frese said. "We did some shifting of roles this summer because I know the fantastic people we already have in our program every day. From my end, I want our staff to bring the best out in our players, in each other and help all of us compete at the highest level. This group will absolutely help us do that."
Fratz, a native of Accident, Md., first joined Frese's staff in the summer of 2017 and assisted with numerous day-to-day tasks including making recruiting materials, recruit scheduling, advance scouting and practice planning. She helped the Terrapins to a record of 26-8, 12-4 in Big Ten play and their fourth straight Big Ten championship game.
"From the day she got here, Kaitlynn has understood what we are about." Frese said. "Her relationships, her work ethic and her Maryland pride are phenomenal. She has some coaching experience already and I know she's ready to take on even more for us this season."
Fratz will assume interim assistant coach duties for this season, which will include making recruiting calls and traveling to see recruits, as well as more advance scouting and practice planning.
Prior to her time in College Park, Fratz spent two years as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State. In her second season, she helped the Lady Blazers to a record of 22-10 and the 2017 Gulf South Conference title. They earned a bid to the NCAA South Region Tournament.
Ehlbeck joined Frese's staff as the Director of Video in the spring of 2016. He currently supervises all film preparation for coaches and student-athletes. In his new role, Ehlbeck will also oversee the Terrapins' advance opponent scouting throughout the season.
"We've been able to watch Sean grow throughout his career," Frese said. "He is a hard worker and he's driven. He has worked in many capacities in our program and knows our system very well. He started as a practice player, an intern and now can do so many things. We love seeing our own people work their way up."
Ehlbeck previously worked on Frese's staff and assisted in the Terps' two Final Four runs in 2014 and 2015. In between his stops in College Park, Ehlbeck oversaw video coordination for the Rice women's basketball program. Ehlbeck graduated from Maryland's R.H. Smith School of Business in May 2013 and was a four-year practice player for the Terrapins.
Jankoska comes to Frese's staff after playing four seasons at Michigan State. She will assist with making recruiting materials, organizing recruit visits, updating recruiting databases and practice planning.
"We got a chance to spend a few weeks with Tori last summer and she just blew us away," Frese said. "Her love of the game, how hard she worked and her drive were all things that we all saw instantly. She will be a fantastic role model and mentor to our players and we are so excited to welcome her here."
Jankoska earned All-Big Ten honors in all four years and First Team honors in 2017. She became the Michigan State career scoring leader and the first Spartan women's basketball player to eclipse the 2,000-point mark. Jankoska also became Michigan State's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 320 and free throws made with 478. She was also second in career assists with 489.
She was drafted ninth overall by the Chicago Sky in 2017 and played professionally in Poland last season.
Jankoska traveled to Taiwan with the Terrapins to play in the World University Games last August. She was second on the team in scoring with 12.5 points per game with 3.3 assists.
The Terps will host Kutztown and Clarion in a pair of exhibitions Oct. 28 and Nov. 2. Maryland will officially open the 2018-19 season with a matchup against Coppin State at the XFINITY Center on Nov. 9.
