COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior defensive back
Antoine Brooks, Jr. and freshman wide receiver
Jeshaun Jones have been recognized by the Big Ten Conference for their stellar play in Maryland's 34-29 win over No. 23 Texas on Saturday.
Brooks was named Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Jones garnered Co-Freshman of the Week accolades.
Brooks led the Terps with 11 tackles and made the game-sealing interception with 1:04 remaining in the win over Texas on Saturday. Brooks tied for the team lead with seven solo tackles and assisted on four others. He also added one tackle for loss.
Jones' memorable debut included a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown, all occurring in the first half of his first collegiate game. The last freshman to record those three things in the same game was Marcus Mariota (2012). No player in the last 20 years has accomplished the feat in his first career game and Jones is the first Big Ten player with a pass, rush and receiving touchdown in a game since Vincent Smith (Michigan) in 2011.
Jones was also named
National Freshman of the Week by CBS Sports.
It's the second Big Ten weekly honor of Brooks' career, as he was named the conferences Co-Special Teams Player of the Week after his 71-yard touchdown return off a blocked field goal led the Terps past Texas in Austin in 2017.
Brooks shares the weekly award with Jake Hansen of Illinois, while Jones splits the honor with Rondale Moore of Purdue.
It marks the first time since Maryland joined the Big Ten (2014) that two Terps garnered weekly conference awards in the same week.
The Terps return to action this Saturday when they travel to Bowling Green. The game is set to kick at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
