LANCASTER, Pa. -- Youssif Hemida,
King Sandoval and
Peter Tedesco all earned fifth-place finishes as members of the Maryland wrestling team wrapped up the F&M Open on Saturday. Each won at least five matches to place in the event, which was hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.
It was Hemida's first action since the senior heavyweight earned a silver medal at the U23 World Championships in November. Hemida opened his tournament with a fall, which was followed by a decision win in the second round. After dropping his match to Seth Nevills by decision, Hemida posted back-to-back wins to advance to the fifth-place match where he won by rule. Hemida's day included a 22-7 technical fall triumph in his consolation bout against Ray O'Donnell.
Tedesco's trip to the podium came after an impressive run through the consolation bracket. After dropping a tight match by decision to begin his day, The Massachusetts native won five consecutive consolation bouts, with four coming by way of decision. Due to the six-match limit, Tedesco won by rule in his fifth-place match.
Sandoval impressed throughout the day in the 125-pound flight. Despite losing his championship round match, Sandoval rattled off a trio of victories to get into the fifth place match. The freshman won by major decision over Brown's Reese Fry, and then secured a sudden victory win in the consolation semifinals over Virginia Tech's Joey Prata. The Maryland native then won the fifth place match with a 45-second fall over NC State's Tommy Cox.
Maryland will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 11, when the Terps open up conference play at Purdue. For full results from the F&M Open, please see below.
