SAN JOSE, Calif. – University of Maryland running back Anthony McFarland Jr. has been selected to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America Team, which was announced at the annual FWAA awards breakfast on Monday.
McFarland is the fourth Terp to garner this distinction since the FWAA began naming this team in 2001. Kicker Nick Ferrara (2009), quarterback Danny O'Brien (2010) and specialist Stefon Diggs (2012) also earned FWAA Freshman All-America nods.
A 2018 Second Team All-Big Ten selection, McFarland finished his record-breaking freshman campaign with 1,034 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He set Maryland freshman records for most rushing yards in a game (298 vs. Ohio State) and most rushing yards in a season. His 1,034 rushing yards ranks as the ninth most in a season in program history.
McFarland averaged 7.89 yards per carry, ranking as the fifth best mark in the country. A two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree, McFarland is the first Maryland player to post consecutive 200-yard rushing games since 1979 and is the first freshman in program history to record four 100-yard games in a season.
A 13-person panel of nationally-prominent college football experts represented each of the FBS conferences along with independents in the selection of the FWAA Freshman All-America Team. Both true freshmen (18 players) and redshirt freshmen (14 players) were considered for the team.
