Charlottesville, Va. – The Terps wrapped up day one of play at the UVA Fab 5 meet on Friday.
Freshman
Ayana Akli and senior
Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka started the day off for Maryland with doubles play, battling against UVA's Amber O'Dell and Sofia Munera coming out victorious with a 6-2 finish. Junior
Amber Policare and senior
Eva Alexandrova fought valiantly against Hunter Bleser and Rosie Johanson of UVA, but fell in a final score of 6-4.
Akli and Yemelyanenka continued doubles play and clinched a win for the Terps against VT's Nika Kozar and Nina Sorkin 6-3. Policare and Alxandrova also reigned victorious on their second round of doubles, defeating Jade Woo and Lily Hackbirth of VT 6-1.
Singles play for Maryland began with Yemelyanenka defeating Hackbirth of VT in one played set, 6-1. Akli then fought through a tough match against UVA's Sofia Munera. Munera took the first set 6-4, with Akli pushing back in 6-2 win in the second set. The match ended in favor of Munera, with Akli still putting up 3 points in a 6-3 match.
Alexandrova faced Vivian Glozman of UVA giving a hard effort, but fell in two matches 6-2, 6-4. Policare concluded play for the Terps with a set one victory over UVA's Chloe Gullickson 6-3. The second match proved to be neck and neck with back to back gains, however Policare fell short 7-5, along with a 6-0 defeat in the final set.
The Terps will continue play in the UVA Fab Five beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
