ROSEMONT, Ill. – Seniors Noelle Frost and Madison Maguire of the second-ranked Maryland field hockey team both earned Big Ten weekly honors Monday. Maguire was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Frost was named Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Maguire led the Terps (13-1, 5-0 B1G) offensively to a dominant 3-0 win over No. 6 Iowa Friday. She scored two of Maryland's three goals en route to their ninth straight victory. After a scoreless first quarter, she took matters into her own hands. About 3:00 into the second quarter, she brought the ball into the circle, weaved around defenders and dove toward the goal as she put the Terps on the board. With 2:50 to play, she tapped in a short pass from Bibi Donraadt as Indiana had pulled its keeper.
In a 6-0 win over Indiana Sunday, she picked up an assist as the Terps scored on a penalty corner. She leads Maryland with 24 points off eight goals and a team-high eight assists.
This is Maguire's third career weekly honor. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct. 11, 2016 and Nov. 1, 2016.
Frost continued her stellar play this season, as she anchored the Terps' defense to two more shutouts. The Terps have picked up five shutouts this year and three straight - two over top 6 opponents. She made three of her six saves against No. 6 Iowa in the second quarter, including two in the closing seconds of the period. She made two more in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout.
Frost and the Terps' defense allowed Indiana just two shots in her 27 minutes in goal. She saved one and the other was blocked. She has not allowed a goal in over 175 minutes.
Frost was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Division I Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8 and Sept. 18. She's earned the Big Ten Defensive weekly honor in three of eight weeks this season. She is third in the country in goals against average (0.80) and fifth in save percentage (.804).
Next, the Terrapins will hit the road for two top-20 Big Ten matchups this weekend. They will play at No. 11 Michigan (10-3, 3-1) Friday at 6 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Terps-Wolverines game will be streamed around the world on BTN Plus. Fans can watch with their BTN Plus subscriptions, which start at $9.95 per month. Live stats will also be available.
