Terps Top Cal U in Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's basketball team won handedly over California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U), 109-67, with a big second half, outscoring the Vulcans 73-37 in the final 20 minutes.
 
The Terps shot 73.8 percent from the floor, going 45-61 from the field and 7-10 from the 3-point line. They held the Vulcans to just 39 percent on 25-64 shooting.
 
Everyone contributed for the Terps, with sophomore Taylor Mikesell leading the way with 17 points, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Senior Stephanie Jones chimed in with 15 points, going 5-7 from the charity stripe, while sophomore Shakira Austin had a perfect night going 7-for-7 from the field, scoring 14.
 
Senior Kaila Charles went 5-6 from the field, scoring 12 points, while also notching three steals. Junior Channise Lewis and senior Sara Vujacic both scored eight points, while Lewis also dished out seven assists. Senior Blair Watson scored six points, shooting 100 percent from the 3-point line (2-2).
 
The freshmen class tallied a total of 29 points. Ashley Owusu led the class with 13 points and three assists. Faith Masonius scored nine, shooting 50 percent from the field, while Diamond Miller scored seven, but lead the Terps with eight rebounds.
 
The Terps outrebounded the Vulcans 42-18 and outscored them in the paint 64-18.
 
The Vulcans went 26-6 last year and advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship. They are picked to finish second in the PSAC.
 
Maryland assistant coach Kaitlynn Fratz played her junior and senior seasons at Cal U, where she led the Vulcans to the 2015 Division II NCAA Championship. Fratz was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Terrapins were picked by both the Big Ten head coaches and the league's media panel to win the conference title this season.
 
The Terrapins are No. 5 in the preseason ESPNW and NCAA polls. The preseason Associated Press poll will be released Wednesday, Oct. 30.

Last season, the Terrapins earned a record of 29-5 last season and won the Big Ten regular season title. They advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game for the fifth straight year and then went to the NCAA Second Round.
 
The Terrapins' non-conference schedule is highlighted by contests with South Carolina, Clemson and North Carolina State. The Terrapins will also take on RPI top-50 team Quinnipiac and 2019 NCAA Tournament participant Belmont.
 
Maryland will host Lincoln University in its second exhibition on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.
 
The Terrapins will officially open the new season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a home matchup against Wagner at 11 a.m. Specific parking instructions for the Nov. 5 game will be posted on umterps.com. Fans are reminded to adhere to all posted parking signage for those lots and all other lots.
