Terrapins Sign Angel Reese, No. 2 Overall Recruit

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's basketball team will keep the No. 2 overall player in the class of 2020, Angel Reese, home in the state of Maryland. Head coach Brenda Frese signed Reese, a five-star, 6-3 guard/forward, to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday.

Reese, a Baltimore native, plays at Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore and for the AAU squad, Team Takeover. She is ranked No. 2 overall and is the No. 1 wing in the class of 2020, as ranked by ESPN. Reese is highest-ranked incoming Terp in program history.

"I can't thank our staff enough for all of their hard work in our recruiting efforts," Frese said. "Angel was someone we have recruited for many years. It's an exciting day to be a Terp and to be able to keep Angel home where she belongs.

"Angel is a dynamic player that can score in a variety of ways. She can utilize her length and athleticism in so many ways. She is extremely versatile and will be able to score, defend and rebound for us. She should have an immediate impact from day one for us and will be a definite crowd pleaser."
"I honestly love Maryland," Reese said. "Each time I visit, it feels like home even more. I love the coaches and players. I can academically be successful at Maryland while studying my major of journalism. I think they have the tools to win a national championship and I want to bring that home to my home state."

Reese led Saint Frances to three straight IAAM championships and two conference titles through the first three years of her high school career. Through her junior year, Reese is averaging 18 points, 20 rebounds and five assists per game.

Earlier this week, Reese was named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy Girls Watch List as one of the top high school players in the country.

Reese was named Player of the Year by The Baltimore Sun after her junior season and was also named to the USA Today First Team. She earned All-Metro First Team honors by The Baltimore Sun after her sophomore and junior seasons. She pulled down 24 rebounds in the GEICO Nationals in her junior year.

"First of all, our Saint Frances staff could not be more excited about Angel's selection of Maryland," said Jerome Shelton, Saint Frances head coach. "We feel great about the educational and athletic opportunities for Angel at Maryland. She will continue to grow as a person and player under the tutelage of Coach Frese. It is also a great opportunity for all those that have followed Angel from the state of Maryland to continue that relationship with her staying close to home."

Her Team Takeover squad won the 2019 EYBL National Title. Reese chipped in 18 points and 11 boards in the championship game.

"Angel exemplifies the true meaning of a position-less player on both ends of the floor because she can play and guard all five positions if need be," her Team Takeover head coach Ron James said. "Angel is one of the most relentless competitors. She will do whatever it takes to win. Add in her high IQ and you have the perfect storm. Angel's most underrated attributes are her energy and enthusiasm she displays for her teammates when she is not in the game. Angel is a special player and will one day be a special coach."

Reese signs with Maryland following two top-five incoming classes, including the No. 4 class in 2018 and the No. 3 class in 2019.

Frese has signed 13 top 10 recruiting class in her 18 years at Maryland. Frese brought in the top recruiting class in 2016 and she signed the nation's No. 2 recruiting class in 2007 and 2010.

No. 8 Maryland (1-1) will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison (2-0) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Dukes' Convocation Center. The Terps-Dukes game will be televised on MASN and streamed on FloSports.tv. Live stats will be available here.
