COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's lacrosse program was named the lacrosse program of the decade by Inside Lacrosse, as released in their December issue.
From 2010-19, Maryland won five national championships, 16 conference championships, made 10 final fours, and had eight Tewaaraton winners, 20 National Players of the Year and 52 All-Americans - all the most in the sport.
The Terps book ended the decade with national championships in 2010 and 2019 while also reaching the pinnacle of the sport in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Maryland never lost more than four games in a season and reached the final four in each of the 10 years, with an appearance in the title game in all but two, while also winning a conference championship each season.
The Tewaaraton Award, the most prestigious honor in lacrosse was awarded to a Terp in eight out of the 10 seasons (Caitlyn McFadden, 2010; Katie Schwarzmann, 2012-13; Taylor Cummings, 2014-16; Zoe Stukenberg, 2017; Megan Taylor, 2019) and Maryland won eight National Midfielder of the Year honors, seven National Defender of the Years, three National Goaltender of the Years and one National Attacker of the Year.
Head Coach Cathy Reese, who led the Terps to the decade of unprecedented success, was named the women's lacrosse Coach of the Decade. Reese earned IWLCA National Coach of the Year honors four times (2010, 2014, 2015, 2019) and the conference coach of the year nine times (five ACC, four Big Ten), winning the award each year except 2015. The all-time winningest coach in program history, Reese led the Terps to a 215-14 record in the decade, only losing in College Park one time. Reese was the quickest women's lacrosse coach ever to 300 wins and now stands seventh all-time with 301. This past year, Reese was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
The only lacrosse player to ever be a three-time recipient of the Tewaaraton Award, Taylor Cummings was selected as the women's lacrosse Midfielder of the Decade. Cummings led the Maryland midfield from 2013-16, winning the national championship in both 2014 and 2015. She was a First Team All-American in each of her four years in College Park and a two-time NCAA Most Outstanding Player. Cummings is the all-time Maryland leader in draw controls (509) and ranks third in career goals (220) and second in points (323). The Maryland native would go on to win a World Championship with Team USA in 2017 and now plays for the WPLL Fight and is the head coach at the McDonogh School.
Megan Douty, who sported the Terrapin uniform from 2012-15, winning the national championship in both 2014 and 2015 earned women's lacrosse Defender of the Decade honors. Douty was a two-time IWLCA National Defender of the Year (2014, 2015) and a two-time conference Defender of the Year (2014 - ACC, 2015 - Big Ten). Like Cummings, Douty was an integral part of the 2017 Team USA World Championship Team, while suiting up for the WPLL Command.
