Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jones Reaches 1,000 Points in Win over Quinnipiac

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --  The ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team rolled to its fourth straight victory with a 107-52 win over Quinnipiac Sunday at the XFINITY Center. Senior Stephanie Jones reached the 1,000-career points mark with nine points in Sunday's matchup.

Jones who was recognized in the last game for reaching her 500th career rebound, entered the game needing just seven points to reach the milestone. Jones reached the mark with a layup with 1:08 left in the third quarter. She is the 34th Terrapin to reach the mark.

"Really excited to be able to see how far we've grown as a team on both ends of the floor," head coach Brenda Frese said. "You talk about the third quarter, holding them to only four points in that third quarter, sharing the basketball. We only had two turnovers in the third quarter as well so, just really clicking on all cylinders and so we want to take that further.

"It's exciting to watch Steph reach 1,000 points. She's one of the most consistent players I've ever coached and she brings it every day. Her work ethic, making our team better and couldn't ask for more to be able to see Stephanie get that on our home court."

The Terrapins got off to a quick start, pounding the ball inside and scoring seven of their 10 made baskets in the first quarter in the paint. Shakira Austin scored all 16 of her points in the first half and Maryland dominated the inside game. The Terps (5-1) led the Bobcats 24-7 after the first quarter and by 21 at halftime. Austin went 7 for 8 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds to help Maryland finish with a 41-31 advantage on the boards.

Six players scored in double figures for Maryland, including freshmen Ashley Owusu with 19 and Diamond Miller with a career-high 17 points. Kaila Charles chimed in with 13 points, Taylor Mikesell had 12, and Sara Vujacic scored 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting, going 3-4 from beyond the arc. All eligible Terrapins scored in the contest for the fourth time this season.

The taller Terrapins scored 56 points in the paint, compared to16 for the Bobcats.

Cur'Tiera Haywood led Quinnipiac (1-3) with nine points. The Bobcats have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons but are off to a slow start in coach Tricia Fabbri's 25th season at the school.

Quinnipiac opened the game with a 3-pointer, then missed its next six shots while Maryland got points from four different players in a 15-0 run.

A layup by Shaq Edwards ended the Bobcats' cold streak, but the Terrapins answered with a 9-0 burst for a 24-5 lead.

It was 45-24 at halftime, and the Terrapins began the third quarter with a 16-0 run to up the margin to 37. Maryland won the third quarter 33-4.

That was enough to send Maryland on its way to a third successive blowout win. Taking control early in each of those games, the Terrapins outscored Delaware, George Washington and Quinnipiac in the first quarter by a collective 76-26 score.

The Terrapins wore purple patches with initials BH on their shooting shirts in honor of longtime supporter of the program and the Terrapins, Bill Henaghan, who passed away this fall.

The Terps are ranked No. 9 in the AP poll released Nov. 18 and No. 10 in the Nov. 19 USA Today Coaches poll.

Next, the Terrapins will hit the road to play in the Daytona Beach Invitational over Thanksgiving. Maryland will play Clemson (2-4) Friday at 5:45 p.m. and Belmont (3-2) Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach and will be streamed on PassThaBall.com.
