EVANSTON, Ill. – Tough shooting and turnovers plagued Maryland as the Terrapins dropped a Big Ten match at Northwestern, 81-58, Tuesday night.
Senior Stephanie Jones led Maryland (10-3, 1-1 B1G) with 14 points to go with six rebounds. Blair Watson added 13 points, nine in the fourth quarter, and seven boards. Kaila Charles scored 10 points with nine rebounds.
Maryland struggled from the floor from the tip. The Terrapins finished 18-for-59 (30.5 percent) and 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) from outside the arc.
The Terrapins, who had been forcing 25 turnovers per game, forced 13 from the Wildcats (12-1, 2-0) and scored 13 points off them. Northwestern forced the Terps into 24 turnovers, 15 in the first half.
"Northwestern was sensational," head coach Brenda Frese said. "They punched first and had a tremendous game plan. They played extremely hard for 40 minutes. It's disappointing for us. I don't think we responded well on the road, first conference game. We turned the ball over too many times and put ourselves in a difficult hole to climb out of."
Northwestern's Lindsey Pulliam scored 24 points and went 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Veronica Burton went 14-for-15 from the foul line and scored 23 points for the Wildcats.
Next, Maryland will return home to host Ohio State (8-5, 1-1) at the XFINITY Center on Monday, Jan. 6. It will be the Terps' annual Price is Right Night. For tickets, click here.
The Terps-Buckeyes game will be televised on ESPN.
