Kaila Charles Named to Cheryl Miller Top 10

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Kaila Charles of the seventh-ranked Maryland women's basketball team is one of 10 candidates for the Cheryl Miller Award, an honor presented to the nation's top small forward by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Named after the three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top small forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.

Charles is leading the Terrapins (22-2, 11-2 B1G) and is fifth in the Big Ten in scoring with 16.0 points per game. She led Maryland to a dominant 62-48 win at No. 20 Rutgers Sunday with 17 points off 7-for-10 shooting from the field.

She's also averaging 6.1 boards, 2.3 assists and is shooting over 51 percent from the floor and 81 percent from the free throw line.

Charles has scored in double figures in 21 of 24 games so far this season and has led the Terps to a 1.5-game lead at the top of the Big Ten standings.

Last week, Charles was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week honor roll for the sixth time in her career. She was also named to the Wade Trophy Watch List, the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 and the Citizen Naismith Trophy Midseason Team in the last week.

A national committee comprising of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
