Terps Set Personal, Season-Bests In Day One Of Big Tens

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On the first day of the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, several Terps stepped up on the track and in the field.
Senior Jewel Smith led the way with a 6th place finish in the long jump. Smith jumped 6.03m to notch a scoring position in the finals. Earlier in the competition, she set a season best of 8.65 in the 60m hurdles.
Following in Smith's footsteps, Christine Laurie ran her best time ever in the mile, Alice Barnsdale threw for a personal-best in the weight throw, and Cheyenne Jones secured a spot in the 400m finals.
Nadia Hackett ran a strong race in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 8.88. Following the hurdles, Bria Mack and Jaida Smith ran in the 60m dash. Mack ran 7.61 with Smith finishing the sprint in 7.64.
In the mile, Christine Laurie ran a career best time of 4:54.26. Later In the meet, Laurie came back to lead off the DMR squad.
Cheyenne Jones qualified for the finals in the 400m dash, running 55.47. Also in the 400m, Destiny Ward ran 56.69 and senior Thaila Cooper competed in this event. In the 800m, Mackenzie Morgan crossed the line in 2:15.23 before coming back to run this same distance on the relay squad.
Gwendolyn Zeckowski cleared 3.64m in the pole vault, showing consistency throughout the season.
Alice Barnsdale threw for a lifetime-best 17.75m in the weight throw and had a solid series throughout the competition.
In the 200m, Jaida Smith and Imani Gray finished back-to-back. Smith finished in 25.14 and Gray ran the 200m in 25.20.
Maryland's distance medley relay team of Christine Laurie, Venida Fagan, Mackenzie Morgan, and Brittany Lang finished out the day strong running 11:45.77.
Day two of competition will open up for the Terps with the women's triple jump and high jump at 2:00 p.m.
