Amber Policare picked up a pair of wins, but the Maryland women's tennis team fell to William & Mary, 4-2, at the Junior Tennis Champions Center on Friday.
Policare earned a doubles win with partner
Arnelle Sullivan before taking home a straight-set win at the fifth singles spot for her second win of the day.
"This was an incredibly close and hard fought match by both teams," head coach Daria Panova said. "The doubles point was crucial today and we came up a little short after of a slow start. I'm proud of how we battled in singles and we're improving with every match."
William & Mary got off to a fast start in the match, winning the doubles point behind a pair of wins at first and second doubles. The Terps were able to take a the third doubles match with Sullivan and Policare, but the Tribe clinched the point with their win at the first spot.
William & Mary then extended its lead to two with a win at fourth singles, as Sullivan returned to singles play for the first time this season.
However, the Terps cut the deficit in half following
Eva Alexandrova's straight-set win at first singles. The sophomore took home a 6-4, 6-4 win for her team-best fourth singles triumph of the year.
Maryland then tied the match following Policare's win at the fifth singles spot. The win was the Long Beach, New York native's second of the season.
William & Mary responded, however, winning a pair of matches at sixth and third singles to clinch the 4-2 win. Senior
Millie Stretton was locked in a third set at second singles, but the match went unfinished due to the Tribe clinch.
Maryland will be back in action on Saturday, hosting No. 48 Princeton at the JTCC. Opening serve is slated for noon.
